Happy Monday SWE members! Here is some information on upcoming events!

1) Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program

This is an excellent summer research opportunity geared to undergraduate and graduate students.  The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides college students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. This program is designed to increase awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask, a flyer is attached as well. 2) SWE Officer Meeting Thursday October 30  

Swe will be having their officer meeting this Thursday from 5-7. You are all welcome to join us!

3) Day with Altera

“Day with Altera” event at our San Jose campus onNovember 7. At the event, a small group of EE and CS students from select Bay Area universities will have the chance to meet Altera engineers and executives, ask questions about the company and the industry, tour our labs, see demos of their technology, lunch and interview with a hiring manager if they are interested in an internship or a full-time position. Space is limited so let us know ASAP if you’re interested in attending this event

4) Teacher Reasearch Experience Program: Summer 2015

STAR is a nine-week summer research experience program for people considering education careers. Participants earn $500/wk doing full-time research at one of our partner research labs (including NASA, NOAA, and 20 other sites) and may be eligible for up to $2,250 of additional support if they need to temporarily relocate for the program. In addition to their research work, participants attend professional development (PD) workshops, teacher-researcher conferences, and become eligible for continued PD and networking opportunities. STAR provided over $335,000 in direct support in 2014 alone.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? This program is open to juniors, seniors, or alumni from ANY CSU campus as long as they have not yet worked as a full-time teacher. The program is also open to Robert Noyce Scholars from anywhere in the country. Applications close onJanuary 15, 2015so please encourage your interested members to check out the online application soon. 5) The Intel Experience 
 
This competition, presented by Intel and Best Buy, will take placeSaturday, November 1, 2014at the Mountain View Best Buy store. Anyone is welcome to participate in this competition and there is no registration required. However, we encourage all of those who wish to participate to RSVP to this email address for planning purposes. Please take the time to read through all of the event details provided below.

Participants will have 60 seconds to present their inventions to a panel of judges that include experts from Intel, Best Buy, and the local science communityThe top ten (10) inventions will be selected by the judgesThe top ten (10)  contestants will be given two (2) minutes for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to present their inventions to Brian Krzanich, the CEO of Intel. These top ten contestants will also receive a $100 Best Buy gift card and anIntel Edison Development Board. From these ten contestants, Mr. Krzanich will select one grand prize winner to receive an additional $500 Best Buy gift card and an Intel 3D Printer.

6) Lockheed Martin Tech Talk Monday October 27th

Lockheed Martin offers the opportunity to work on teams of highly skilled professionals to solve some of the most challenging and exciting engineering, information system and software development problems in the world. Attached is a flyer if you’re interested in attending this event.

9) Space Technology Research Grants Program

The Space Technology Research Grants Program has released its annual application for the Nasa Space Technology Research Fellowships. Applications will be considered from students pursuing a maser’s or doctoral degree in relevant space technology disciplines. The submission deadline is November 13, 2014 at 6pmPlease see the flyer attached below for further details.

10)International Women’s Hackathon

Come out and join us on Nov. 15 for the International Women’s Hackathon at San Jose State University and code for a good cause! Note that if you’re a guy who would like to participate, you must have at least one woman on your team in the spirit of this 12 hour hackathon. Attached are flyers regarding the challenges.

We are about half way through the semester! Here are some updates on what SWE SJSU has going on.

1) Female Volunteers Needed for Girl Scout Outreach Event on Sat Oct 18th

The College of Engineering will be hosting a Girl Scout outreach event on Sat Oct 18th. Girls in grades 4-8th will come to our campus and engage in hands-on engineering activities designed by the Girl Scouts. We are looking for female engineering or science students to help run the event. You will be trained in everything you need to know.  If interested please fill out the form below:

2) Next General Meeting: 4th Street BOWLING!

SWE is hosting its next general meeting at 4th Street Bowl from 2-5pm! It will be $3.50/shoe rental + $4.50/game! The flyer is attached below, if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

7) USC Graduate Engineering Info Session

University of Southern California (USC) is pleased to inform you that they will be in San Jose to host an info session on graduate engineering opportunities. Requirements: Bring your laptop, resume, and any relevant information to create or improve your resume.
Description: 75% of resumes are screened out by automated software as soon you as submit them online, despite how qualified you may be. Learn how to create a resume that passes the screening process to increase your chances in getting a job interview.

SWE annually hosts a conference for members to attend. This year the conference is dated October 23- 25 in Los Angeles. We will be carpooling down to LA on Wednesday, October 22 and carpooling back Sunday, October 26. SWE-SJSU has booked rooms for the hotel, which will be $120 per person. SWE-SJSU will also help with registration costs. If you are interested please fill out this Google Doc. 2)      An Introduction to Lockheed Martin and Tech Talk

LM is hosting an event co-sponsored by ASME where you can learn about their company and “A day in the life of a problem solving engineer: from college textbooks to infinity and beyond.” LM hires engineers from all concentrations, so don’t miss out on this opportunity. If you are interested in attending, see the flyer (SJSU_Flyer_Fall_2014) and show up tomorrow in ENGR 285-287 Tuesday September 16th at 12 pm to 1 pm prepared with your resume. I hope to see you all there!

3)    First Member Meeting:

We are hosting our first member meeting on September 18th from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm in ENGR 242. We are having our past SWE members who held an internship panel at this meeting. If you would like to be on the panel please email us back with your interest. Pizza will be served! Look forward to seeing everybody on Thursday afternoon!

 

4)      MEP Retreat:

Thank you to all who attended the leadership retreat this past Saturday. I know it can be tough with our busy schedules. For anyone who wanted to attend but couldn’t, don’t fret because we plan on implementing some of the methods we learned into our meetings and events. If I name just one thing to take away from this experience I would like to share, it is:

“To be a leader, you must first know yourself!”

I hope everyone tries to make it next year as I found it to be a great way to network with both SJSU students and industry representatives.

 

5)      SWE Region A Officer Training:

Today is the last day to register!

SJSU SWE is hosting the first SWE Leadership Retreat this Saturday September 20th from 9:30 pm to 2:00 pm. SWE will be hosting a bake sale in the Engineering Lobby on Tuesday, September 23rd from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm to help raise funds for the annual conference. If you are interested in donating baked goods or helping table during the sale, please fill out this Google Form.

SWE SJSU is starting up a team to compete in team tech which is a project oriented competition that is put on ever year by the Society of Women Engineers.
