Happy Monday SWE members! Here is some information on upcoming events!

1) Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program

This is an excellent summer research opportunity geared to undergraduate and graduate students.  The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides college students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. This program is designed to increase awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask, a flyer is attached as well. 2) SWE Officer Meeting Thursday October 30  

Swe will be having their officer meeting this Thursday from 5-7. You are all welcome to join us!

3) Day with Altera

“Day with Altera” event at our San Jose campus onNovember 7. At the event, a small group of EE and CS students from select Bay Area universities will have the chance to meet Altera engineers and executives, ask questions about the company and the industry, tour our labs, see demos of their technology, lunch and interview with a hiring manager if they are interested in an internship or a full-time position. Space is limited so let us know ASAP if you’re interested in attending this event

4) Teacher Reasearch Experience Program: Summer 2015

STAR is a nine-week summer research experience program for people considering education careers. Participants earn $500/wk doing full-time research at one of our partner research labs (including NASA, NOAA, and 20 other sites) and may be eligible for up to $2,250 of additional support if they need to temporarily relocate for the program. In addition to their research work, participants attend professional development (PD) workshops, teacher-researcher conferences, and become eligible for continued PD and networking opportunities. STAR provided over $335,000 in direct support in 2014 alone.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? This program is open to juniors, seniors, or alumni from ANY CSU campus as long as they have not yet worked as a full-time teacher. The program is also open to Robert Noyce Scholars from anywhere in the country. Applications close onJanuary 15, 2015so please encourage your interested members to check out the online application soon. 5) The Intel Experience 
This competition, presented by Intel and Best Buy, will take placeSaturday, November 1, 2014at the Mountain View Best Buy store. Anyone is welcome to participate in this competition and there is no registration required. However, we encourage all of those who wish to participate to RSVP to this email address for planning purposes. Please take the time to read through all of the event details provided below.

Contest Details:
Participants will have 60 seconds to present their inventions to a panel of judges that include experts from Intel, Best Buy, and the local science communityThe top ten (10) inventions will be selected by the judgesThe top ten (10)  contestants will be given two (2) minutes for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to present their inventions to Brian Krzanich, the CEO of Intel. These top ten contestants will also receive a $100 Best Buy gift card and anIntel Edison Development Board. From these ten contestants, Mr. Krzanich will select one grand prize winner to receive an additional $500 Best Buy gift card and an Intel 3D Printer.

6) Lockheed Martin Tech Talk Monday October 27th

Lockheed Martin offers the opportunity to work on teams of highly skilled professionals to solve some of the most challenging and exciting engineering, information system and software development problems in the world. Attached is a flyer if you’re interested in attending this event.

9) Space Technology Research Grants Program

The Space Technology Research Grants Program has released its annual application for the Nasa Space Technology Research Fellowships. Applications will be considered from students pursuing a maser’s or doctoral degree in relevant space technology disciplines. The submission deadline is November 13, 2014 at 6pmPlease see the flyer attached below for further details.

10)International Women’s Hackathon

Come out and join us on Nov. 15 for the International Women’s Hackathon at San Jose State University and code for a good cause! Note that if you’re a guy who would like to participate, you must have at least one woman on your team in the spirit of this 12 hour hackathon. Attached are flyers regarding the challenges.
