Good Morning SWE Members!

1) Soles Info Session: Intel

Soles will be hosting an info session on Thursday 11/20/14 from 7:00pm-8:30pm in ENGR 189, anyone interested in attending the event is encouraged to bring a hard copy of their resume. After the meeting the group will be going to Smoke Eaters to socialize!

2) Job opportunity: CyberGirlz Silicon Valley program mentor

CyberGirlz are currently recruiting candidates for positions in their Silicon Valley mentors program.  Please see the attached job announcement.

3) WITT Talk – “10 Lessons Learned from a Women Founder”

 Vlada Bortnik is a seasoned tech executive, product designer, and a serial entrepreneur. Most recently she co-founded Happy Bits Co to help people feel close, no matter the distance. Vlada runs the Product team, including User Experience, Research and Design. Her work has won numerous accolades, including from Apple and Time Magazine. She has 10+ years of experience leading cross-functional teams and delivering products used by hundreds of millions of users.

The talk will be on November 18th at 5pm in Sweeny Hall 238, hope to see you there!

4) SWE 4th Street Pizza Fundraiser

Head on over to 4th Street Pizza to help SWE fund raise for a new printer, Thursday December 4th from 4pm-11pm! Please either bring the attached flyer or state that you’re from SJSU-SWE.

5) SWE elections

We are looking for SWE members to serve on the nominating committee. If you’re interested in being on the committee, please let us know and we will send you more information!

6) SWE- T-shirts

SWE is looking for designs for their new T-shirts, if anyone wants to come up with a design we will be accepting those until the end of January! So send us your masterpieces and maybe it’ll be on the next SWE-SJSU shirt.

7) SWE Holiday Event

SWE will have a cookie decorating Holiday Event December 5th, everyone is invited, it will be followed by an Officer Meeting! More information will be provided, see you then :]

8) SWE Region A Conference

SWE will have their annual SWE Region A conference from February 20-22, 2015 at the University of Pacific Stockton, California! Registration before January 30th is $40 and before February 6th is $45! We will keep you updated as the conference comes closer.

9) WOW! That’s Engineering 2015

WOW! That’s Engineering is scheduled to be on March 14th, 2015. Please keep this date open if you’re interested in volunteering or partaking in this event.

10) Teacher Research Experience Program: Summer 2015

STAR is a nine-week summer research experience program for people considering education careers. Participants earn $500/wk doing full-time research at one of our partner research labs (including NASA, NOAA, and 20 other sites) and may be eligible for up to $2,250 of additional support if they need to temporarily relocate for the program. In addition to their research work, participants attend professional development (PD) workshops, teacher-researcher conferences, and become eligible for continued PD and networking opportunities. STAR provided over $335,000 in direct support in 2014 alone.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? This program is open to juniors, seniors, or alumni from ANY CSU campus as long as they have not yet worked as a full-time teacher. The program is also open to Robert Noyce Scholars from anywhere in the country. Applications close on January 15, 2015 so please encourage your interested members to check out the online application soon. SWE Shout Out 11/3/14

Happy Monday SWE members! Here is some information on upcoming events!

1) Member Meeting Thursday November 13th
Our next member meeting will be held: Thursday, November 13th at 4:00pm, we will have pizza at the meeting and it will be followed by a resume workshop. See you all there!

2) Resume Workshop presented by SWE 

SWE will be hosting a Resume Workshop November 13 from 5:00-5:30pm right after the Member meeting.  Members will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn about ways to better their resume and are welcome to bring their resume for feedback.

Requirements: Bring your laptop, resume, and any relevant information to create or improve your resume.

Description: 75% of resumes are screened out by automated software as soon you as submit them online, despite how qualified you may be. Learn how to create a resume that passes the screening process to increase your chances in getting a job interview.

3) Day with Altera

“Day with Altera” event at our San Jose campus on November 7. At the event, a small group of EE and CS students from select Bay Area universities will have the chance to meet Altera engineers and executives, ask questions about the company and the industry, tour our labs, see demos of their technology, lunch and interview with a hiring manager if they are interested in an internship or a full-time position. Space is limited so let us know ASAP if you’re interested in attending this event.

4) Xilinx Job Openings for Interns, Co-ops and Entry level

The updated list of Xilinx job openings is attached. Please let us know if you think you’re a qualified candidate for a certain position and apply online.

5) Space Technology Research Grants Program

The Space Technology Research Grants Program has released its annual application for the Nasa Space Technology Research Fellowships. Applications will be considered from students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in relevant space technology disciplines. The submission deadline is November 13, 2014 at 6pm.

6) International Women’s Hackathon

Come out and join us on Nov. 15 for the International Women’s Hackathon at San Jose State University and code for a good cause! Note that if you’re a guy who would like to participate, you must have at least one woman on your team in the spirit of this 12 hour hackathon.

8) Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program

This is an excellent summer research opportunity geared to undergraduate and graduate students.  The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides college students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. This program is designed to increase awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
