Hello SWE Members!

SWE is off to a running start with lost of activities planned! Here is what SJSU-SWE is working on:

1) SWE Region A Conference

 You may still go to conference even if you missed this past Friday’s deadline. You can sign up at the door for $50, just show up! Hope to see you there! For those who are interested in going please fill out the following Google doc.

2) SWE WITT w/ Lea Poquerusse

Lea Poquerusse is a first year MBA student at the Stanford Business School and engineer by training. She has a BEng from McGill (2010) and an MS from MIT (2012), both in chemical engineering. Prior to attending Stanford, she worked in energy consulting for a company called Navigant in Boston and then Dubai. Lea Poquerusse will be giving a talk “Unlocking Your Potential & Being Comfortable with the Unknown Road Ahead” on March 3rd at 5:00 pm in ENGR 242.

3) SWE Officer Meeting next Wednesday, February 11th at 5:00 pm

We will be holding our second officer meeting of the semester on Wednesday, February 11th at 5:00 pm in ENGR 242. All members are invited, so we hope you can make it!

3) SWE General Member Meeting next Wednesday, February 11th at 6:00 pm

We will be holding our first member meeting of the semester on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:00 pm in ENGR 242 right after the officer meeting. SWE is going to be having a Mock Career Fair at this meeting, which will include both a resume booth and an interview booth. Before attending the EXPO ‘15 Engineering and Science Job & Internship Fair on February 24th in the SJSU Event Center, take advantage of this opportunity to “warm-up” and learn from our experienced SWE members. We hope to see you all there and pizza will be provided. Come catch up with our SWE officers and members, new and old!

4) SOLES and SWE Bowling Social on February 12th

SOLES and SWE are having the first of many joint activities next Thursday, February 12th at 8:00 pm in AMF Mission Lanes. Please email us back if you are interested in going so we may get a head count. We hope to see you all there! :)

5) SWE Resume Workshop

We would like to invite you to a resume workshop on Wednesday, February 18th at 5:00 pm in ENGR 285 hosted by SWE in collaboration with Donna Gilmour, Employment Specialist Lead and Liaison to the College of Engineering & Department of Computer Science. Bring in your resume and feel free to ask any questions you have regarding your resume or cover letter. All students are welcome to participate!

6) SWE Call for Applications for FY’16 Officers

It is this time of year again to start thinking about whether you want to become the next leader for SWE-SJSU for next year. Leadership comes with many benefits and rewards, feel free to ask any of our current officers. Now is the time to start considering if you would like to be the next President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer of SWE-SJSU!

1) SWE 4th Street Pizza Fundraiser

Bring some friends and head on over to 4th Street Pizza to help SWE fund raise for a new printer,Thursday, December 4th from 4pm- 11pm! Please either bring the flyer or state that you’re from SJSU-SWE. See you there! :)

2) Engineering at Dartmouth

3) SWE Holiday Event

SWE is having a cookie decorating Holiday Event Friday, December 5th at 2:30pm, everyone is invited! Frosting will be provided and cookies are being donated by our awesome SWE members, see you then! :]

SWE is having an officer meeting on Friday, December 5th at 1:30pm. We would like to remind you that all members are invited and welcomed to our meetings, so feel free to get more involved or make suggestions. Become an active member, it’s never too late!

Shout Out 11/17

Good Morning SWE Members!

1) Soles Info Session: Intel

Soles will be hosting an info session on Thursday 11/20/14 from 7:00pm-8:30pm in ENGR 189, anyone interested in attending the event is encouraged to bring a hard copy of their resume. After the meeting the group will be going to Smoke Eaters to socialize!

2) Job opportunity: CyberGirlz Silicon Valley program mentor

CyberGirlz are currently recruiting candidates for positions in their Silicon Valley mentors program.  Please see the attached job announcement.

3) WITT Talk – “10 Lessons Learned from a Women Founder”

 Vlada Bortnik is a seasoned tech executive, product designer, and a serial entrepreneur. Most recently she co-founded Happy Bits Co to help people feel close, no matter the distance. Vlada runs the Product team, including User Experience, Research and Design. Her work has won numerous accolades, including from Apple and Time Magazine. She has 10+ years of experience leading cross-functional teams and delivering products used by hundreds of millions of users.

The talk will be on November 18th at 5pm in Sweeny Hall 238, hope to see you there!

4) SWE 4th Street Pizza Fundraiser

10) Teacher Research Experience Program: Summer 2015

STAR is a nine-week summer research experience program for people considering education careers. Participants earn $500/wk doing full-time research at one of our partner research labs (including NASA, NOAA, and 20 other sites) and may be eligible for up to $2,250 of additional support if they need to temporarily relocate for the program. In addition to their research work, participants attend professional development (PD) workshops, teacher-researcher conferences, and become eligible for continued PD and networking opportunities. STAR provided over $335,000 in direct support in 2014 alone.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? This program is open to juniors, seniors, or alumni from ANY CSU campus as long as they have not yet worked as a full-time teacher. The program is also open to Robert Noyce Scholars from anywhere in the country. Applications close on January 15, 2015 so please encourage your interested members to check out the online application soon. Happy Monday SWE members! Here is some information on upcoming events!

1) Member Meeting Thursday November 13th
Our next member meeting will be held: Thursday, November 13th at 4:00pm, we will have pizza at the meeting and it will be followed by a resume workshop. See you all there!

2) Resume Workshop presented by SWE 

SWE will be hosting a Resume Workshop November 13 from 5:00-5:30pm right after the Member meeting.  Members will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn about ways to better their resume and are welcome to bring their resume for feedback.

Requirements: Bring your laptop, resume, and any relevant information to create or improve your resume.

Description: 75% of resumes are screened out by automated software as soon you as submit them online, despite how qualified you may be. Learn how to create a resume that passes the screening process to increase your chances in getting a job interview.

3) Day with Altera

“Day with Altera” event at our San Jose campus on November 7. At the event, a small group of EE and CS students from select Bay Area universities will have the chance to meet Altera engineers and executives, ask questions about the company and the industry, tour our labs, see demos of their technology, lunch and interview with a hiring manager if they are interested in an internship or a full-time position. Space is limited so let us know ASAP if you’re interested in attending this event.

4) Xilinx Job Openings for Interns, Co-ops and Entry level

The updated list of Xilinx job openings is attached. Please let us know if you think you’re a qualified candidate for a certain position and apply online.

Additionally, please note that Xilinx provides the opportunity to enhance your educational experience with Xilinx technology through Xilinx University Programs (XUP).  Check it out!

5) Space Technology Research Grants Program

The Space Technology Research Grants Program has released its annual application for the Nasa Space Technology Research Fellowships. Applications will be considered from students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in relevant space technology disciplines. The submission deadline is November 13, 2014 at 6pm.

6) International Women’s Hackathon

Come out and join us on Nov. 15 for the International Women’s Hackathon at San Jose State University and code for a good cause! Note that if you’re a guy who would like to participate, you must have at least one woman on your team in the spirit of this 12 hour hackathon.

8) Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program

This is an excellent summer research opportunity geared to undergraduate and graduate students.  The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides college students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. This program is designed to increase awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
